Types of Scholarships

VIU currently offers several types of scholarship to assist prospective and current students, on-campus and online. Applicants who have started their application to admissions are considered prospective students. Prospective students may start their application to the scholarship program prior to receiving an acceptance letter from VIU’s Admissions Office. Scholarship award will be applied based upon acceptance status and enrollment. Current students are individuals who have been enrolled at Virginia International University as full-time students for at least one full semester. Transfer-In Scholarship (prospective students – on-campus and online)

Amount:$500 – to be applied to the first semester only

Availability:All terms (Spring I, Spring II, Summer I, Summer II, Fall I and Fall II; early and late application

Who can apply: ESL, undergraduate and graduate students (domestic and international inside the US)

The Transfer-In Scholarship is awarded to students who are transferring to Virginia International University for the first time from another college or university in the United States. This scholarship assists students who are looking for a fresh start at our university and to those who have committed to educational success throughout their lifetime. This scholarship is awarded to first time, transfer-in students only.

Eligibility 
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Must apply for one of VIU’s on-campus or online undergraduate, graduate, or ESL program.
  • On-campus students must attend classes full-time.
  • Must have been attended undergraduate, graduate, or ESL program at an accredited university in the U.S. for at least one semester.
  • Undergraduate and Graduate students must be in good academic standing and meet a minimum 3.00 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative GPA requirement.

Application Documents: Complete applications must include the following:

  1. Scholarship application form (applicant portal)
  2. Undergraduate and Graduate students: Most recent transcript from the last college, or university attended in the United States. Transcript should indicate the completion of a minimum of 9 credits (graduate level) or 12 credits (undergraduate level) from an accredited United States post-secondary institution (not VIU) at which the language of instruction was English. The GPA for those credits must not be lower than C-level. ESL students: Transcript indicating enrolment in ESL program.
  3. Personal statement of success of at least 500 words (250 words for ESL students) describing your background, future goals, education, influential experiences and career objectives. This should be in the form of an essay, not a list of facts.

New Horizon Scholarship (prospective and current students – on-campus and online)

Amount: from 25% tuition discount – up to full tuition to be divided by two or four consecutive semesters (academic students)/ $700 up to full tuition - to be divided by four consecutive terms (ESL students)

Availability: All terms (Spring I, Spring II, Summer I, Summer II, Fall I and Fall II); early and late application

Who can apply: Open to all who qualify

The purpose of the New Horizon Scholarship at Virginia International University is to provide tuition assistance to students who are living in areas of the world where there have been recent natural disasters or civil unrest. Virginia International University believes that all students deserve the opportunity to attain their educational goals, regardless of the constraints that such situation would put on accomplishing these goals. The application for this scholarship is open all year around.

Eligibility:To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following qualification:

  • Must be enrolled in or apply for one of VIU’s on-campus undergraduate, graduate, or ESL program as a full-time student.
  • Must be living in areas where there is either a recent natural disaster or civil unrest (VIU reserves the sole right and responsibility to determine whether a country qualifies for the New Horizon Scholarship).

Application Documents: Complete applications must include the following:

  1. Scholarship application form (student portal or applicant portal)
  2. Personal statement of success of at least 500 words (250 words for ESL students) describing how the situation in your country has affected you. Describe your background, future goals, education, influential experiences, need, and career objectives. This should be in the form of an essay, not a list of facts.
  3. Evidence of recent natural disaster or civil unrest in the country/region of origin. At least two news articles in PDF format providing details of the situation. News articles may come from a local, national, or international newspaper, news magazine, or websites associated with the newspaper or news magazine. Blogs will not be accepted.

Online Scholarship (Alumni and prospective – online)

Amount: up to $1,000 to be divided by 4 consecutive terms (online)

Availability:All terms (Spring I, Spring II, Summer I, Summer II, Fall I and Fall II)

Who can apply: undergraduate and graduate students (domestic and international)

VIU Online Scholarship is awarded to students who intend to advance their professional skills sets in pursuit of advancing their role in the global workforce. The selection is based upon academic achievement.

Eligibility 
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in one of VIU’s online undergraduate or graduate program as a full-time student.
  • Must be in good academic standing and meet a minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative GPA requirement.

Application Documents: Completed applications must include all of the following:

  1. Online application form (applicant portal)
  2. Secondary or Higher Education Transcript showing cumulative GPA.
  3. Personal statement of success of at least 500 words describing your background, future goals, education, influential experiences and career objectives. This should be in the form of an essay, not a list of facts.
  4. Evidence of English proficiency

    Option 1: Test Scores – TOEFL score of at least 80 (iBT) or 550 (pBT); OR an IELTS score of at least 6.0 OR a PTE Academic score of least 59.
    Option 2: Provide transcript indicating completion of a minimum of 9 credit hours (graduate program) or 12 credit hours (undergraduate program) from an accredited United States post-secondary institution (not VIU) at which the language of instruction was English. Or provide an official transcript indicating you have earned your bachelor's, master’s, or doctorate degree in its entirety in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Anglophone Canada, Nigeria, Singapore, The Philippines, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cook Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Antigua and Barbuda.

Need-Based (prospective students - on-campus and online)

Amount: up to $1,000 to be divided by 2 consecutive semesters (on-campus) or by 4 consecutive terms (online);

Availability:All terms (Spring I, Spring II, Summer I, Summer II, Fall I and Fall II)

Who can apply: undergraduate students (domestic)

The purpose of the Need-Based scholarship is to provide tuition assistance to students who come from low income families. Virginia International University believes that all students deserve the opportunity to attain their educational goals, regardless of their financial constraints.

Eligibility 
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following qualification:

  • Must apply for any of VIU’s on-campus or online, undergraduate program as a full-time student.
  • Must be U.S. citizens, or permanent residents, living in the US with 0 (zero) EFC.

To maintain the scholarship for the following semester:

  • Must be in good academic standing and meet a minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative GPA.

Career Online Scholarship (prospective and current - online)

Amount: up to $5,000 to be divided by 4 consecutive semesters (online)

Availability:All terms (Spring I, Spring II, Summer I, Summer II, Fall I and Fall II)

Who can apply: undergraduate and graduate students (domestic and international)

The VIU Career Online Scholarship is awarded to recipients who come to VIU intending to advance their professional skills sets in pursuit of advancing their role in the global workforce. The selection is based upon both academic and career achievements.

Eligibility 
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in one of VIU’s online undergraduate or graduate program as a part-time or full-time student.
  • Must be in good academic standing and meet a minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative GPA requirement.
  • Should have at least 3 years of professional work experience.

Application Requirements: Completed applications must include all of the following:

  1. Online application form (applicant portal or student portal)
  2. Secondary or Higher Education Transcript showing cumulative GPA.
  3. Personal statement of success of at least 500 words describing your background, future goals, education, influential experiences and career objectives. This should be in the form of an essay, not a list of facts.
  4. Verification of 3 years of professional work experience (resume, CV, letter of recommendation etc.)

Presidential Scholarship (Alumni and current - on-campus and online)

Amount: $4,000 up to full tuition to be divided by 2 consecutive semesters (on-campus) or by 4 consecutive terms (online);

Availability: Spring, Summer, and Fall; late application

Who can apply: undergraduate and graduate students (domestic and international)

The Presidential Academic Scholarship is the most prestigious merit-based scholarship offered by the university. The selection is based upon exceptional academic achievement, as well as the potential for continued academic and professional success.

Eligibility: To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following qualification:

  • Must be enrolled in or apply for one of VIU’s on-campus or online, undergraduate or graduate program as a full-time student.
  • Must be in good academic standing and meet a minimum 3.9 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative GPA requirement.

Application Documents: Completed applications must include all of the following:

  1. Scholarship application form (Online Form)
  2. Personal statement of success of at least 500 words describing your background, future goals, education, influential experiences and career objectives. This should be in the form of an essay, not a list of facts.
  3. Two letters of recommendation from faculty members at VIU
  4. Evidence of English Language Proficiency (any ONE of the following):

    Option 1: Test Scores – TOEFL score of at least 90 (iBT) or 575 (pBT) OR an IELTS score of at least 6.5 OR a PTE Academic score of least 63.
    Option 2: Provide transcript indicating completion of a minimum of 9 credit hours (graduate program) or 12 credit hours (undergraduate program) from an accredited United States post-secondary institution (not VIU) at which the language of instruction was English. Or provide an official transcript indicating you have earned your bachelor's, master’s, or doctorate degree in its entirety in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Anglophone Canada, Nigeria, Singapore, The Philippines, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cook Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Antigua and Barbuda.
    Option 3: Provide a Certificate of Completion from the Intensive ESL Program at Virginia International University.
