Minimum Technical Requirements

Recommended Technical Requirements for a Student

To run VIU’s Learning Management System (Moodle) effectively you should, at a minimum, use the following technical components. If you do not follow the suggested requirements, Moodle may still work, but some functionality may be lost.

System Requirements

Students must have access to high-speed internet and a personal computer that is up-to-date and maintained. Students taking online courses will also need a microphone, speaker (or earphones), and a webcam. These items can be either built-in or external.

For PC Users

  • High Speed Internet connection
  • Processor: i5 / equivalent or better processor
  • Operating System: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or newer with current updates installed
  • Memory: 4+ Gigabytes RAM Memory or higher
  • Speaker (built-in or external)
  • Microphone (built-in or external)
  • Monitor with 1280 x 1024 pixel resolution or better

For Mac Users

  • High Speed Internet connection
  • Processor: i3 / equivalent or better processor
  • Operating System: OS X 10.6.1 or newer
  • Memory: 4+ Gigabytes RAM Memory or higher
  • Speaker (built-in or external)
  • Microphone (built-in or external)
  • Monitor with 1280 x 1024 pixel resolution or better

For Tablets and Smart Phones

Although Moodle works on most tablets and smart phones, some features may not work properly on these devices. We recommend using a PC or Mac as your primary means of access to Moodle.

Browser Requirements

Firefox is the preferred browser for using Moodle, whether on a PC or Mac platform. If you are finding you have limited functionality, it is often due to using a browser other than Firefox. Other browsers may be used, but may not support all functions in Moodle. All browsers should have JavaScript, Cookies, and Pop-ups enabled.

  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Google Chrome
  • Safari (for Mac users)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (for PC users)
  • Opera

Please use the latest versions of above mentioned browsers.

Application Requirements

  • Current virus detection software (must be installed and kept up-to-date)
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or an equivalent (e.g. OpenOffice, LibreOffice) need to be installed to view all the resources uploaded to Moodle
  • Java/JRE
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader (to open and save PDF files)
  • Adobe Flash Player
  • Windows Media Player / QuickTime Player / VLC Media Player

Headsets

  • Logitech Clear Chat Style / ClearChat PC Wireless / Logitech H330 USB Microphone

Protect Your Work

Creating a back-up of your work is always a recommended best practice. We urge you to back-up all of your work, especially when making posts to discussion boards, responding to essay questions, or composing a lengthy or important response directly into a Moodle course activity.
