Student Orientation

Welcome to VIU School of Online Education Orientation! Our online orientation videos were created to help you prepare for your online courses and become successful in your online program. In our orientation videos, you will learn:

  • How to access your campus email and the student portal
  • How to register for an online course
  • How to make a payment for your tuition and fees
  • Step-by-step instructions for how to access your online classrooms
  • Other support and learning resources available to all VIU Online students, including the Accounting Office, eTextbook, the online library, technical support, the Writing Center (WRMC), the Career Center, and Quality Assurance (QA)
  • Academic integrity policies

In addition to the orientation videos, new online students will receive an online orientation handbook individually via email with more detailed information. In the orientation handbook, you will find the following information:

  • Message from the Dean of the School of Online Education
  • Checklist for new online students
  • Technical requirements for online courses
  • How to access your campus email and the student portal
  • How to register for an online course
  • How to contact your academic advisor
  • How to make a payment for tuition and fees
  • Scholarship opportunities for online students
  • How to use eCampus (the online classroom)
  • Online student services and learning resources, including the Accounting Office, eTextbook, the online library, technical support, the Writing Center (WRMC), the Career Center, Quality Assurance (QA), and counseling services
  • Academic integrity and plagiarism policies

For one online course, you can expect to spend approximately 16-18 hours per week engaged in reading and experiencing course content, completing course assignments, and participating in online discussions and collaborative projects. It is mandatory for every new student to watch the online orientation videos and read the orientation handbook carefully.
